She wasn’t used to getting new shoes because her family at limited money and she always got her sisters hammy-down shoes. Ella and her friend from school spend weeks gathering, cleaning, and polishing old shoes and turning them into new ones.

Since she has watched another girl, a white girl with blonde hair, try on shoes, she experiences--perhaps for the first time--how unfair and how unjustified prejudices are.

This book is very powerful because it provides detail illustration that shows the emotions of how the girls were feeling the day, they were discriminated because of their skin color.
