But we used poplar in our kitchen after a major renovation for the baseboard, I used a GF gel stain (I think nutmeg, but don’t quote me on that) with GF Arm R Seal over that, and it turned out great.It grows like the weeds here in southeast Indiana, I love it!I use poplar for a lot (most) of my projects since it’s readily available in my area and most projects are painted.Poplar has always been my go-to wood for painted projects.
Water-based finishes don’t have that property.I recently discovered Poplar plywood: it’s quite lightweight and as it is less expensive, I did buy the best quality plywood and was still able to stay on a budget. In fact I have picked up boards that were more green than not (because they were the flattest in the stack) and it makes very little difference to the color, just how dark the stain comes out.
