The television movie didn't even begin to capture the spirit of the book. Was this review helpful? Harsh, separated by race, and a very southern setting. What about Janie's background made her make the choices she made? The stories revolve around the racial and class complexities of interracial and class-based marriages.

movie that I've tried to watch only because it an Oprah Winfrey Film and again I walked away very disappointed. This was altered, so that the audience watching the movie would not decrease the sympathy they had for handsome, charismatic Tea Cake. Thank you, Oprah.

I'm sorry. Also, in the book Janie is married to Tea Cake for 20+ years, but the movie made it seem like she was married to him for 10 minutes! It is a movie and if you are not familiar with Hollywood looks matter, if Halle's character was supposed to have been unattractive she still would have been beautiful for the movie it is just the way it is! This was a story unlike any other about black love. Without that sense of social belonging, Janie could not find the voice she had been lacking for so long, the voice that could stand up to Joe Starks and demand respect as a human being separate from his and the town’s vision of her as Mrs. Mayor.Once Janie is single again (at age 37) she begins her true growth spurt. Thousand of people have tried and nearly all of them have failed. As Queen grows up, she faces the struggle of trying to fit into ... He adds dimension to his role making you see the sleazy man coveting Janie from afar. If This was to ever go to theater it would have easily shared best picture (with Ray)and yes, Halle would have shared the Oscar with Jaimie Foxx. He only gets angry when Amos is coveting her. The Oprah Winfrey Presents adaptation of the Zora Neal Hurston novel Their Eyes Were Watching God is a major disappointment. To do justice to the book, the movie should have been in two parts, the first could have focused on Janie's childhood and youth and her life with Joe Starks and the second could have focused on her life with Tea Cake. 7 out of 12 found this helpful. Come on! Having seen the movie and heard about the book it is now making me want to read the book.
This was simply a poor cast when it started with Ms Berry.. I have to agree with the first comment, because this movie was nothing special. A plantation owner's son falls in love with a slave named Easter and together they have a Mixed race daughter named Queen. On screen she comes off as lazy and irresponsible when she hates doing the work on the farm. Rent Their Eyes Were Watching God (2005) starring Halle Berry and Ruben Santiago-Hudson on DVD and Blu-ray. Winfrey makes Tea Cakes' abuse of Janie seem like it's honorable. Some may find the movie enjoyable, but me in particular did not find it to be to amusing. I don't recommend it. It is also kind of harsh to say that the movie was that awful, it was a love story and that was what was portrayed. As a student reading the book for the first time, and having just watched the movie, I was very disappointed in the shallowness of the characters. Janie was described as the tragic hero of the novel, who was also dim witted and beautiful. I watched the movie with four other Black people, two men and two women. It's like "Slumdog Millionaire" - compared to the book - the movie was an ethnocentric disgrace. Most books should be left alone but then most people don't read the book. There was no dept to Janie like there was in the book; she was lofty and showed very little personal growth. But it is a very good movie - especially for a made for TV movie. If you can't make it better, then leave it alone. I think Oprah did a wonderful job with this one but it could have been made better on another channel. 43 out of 48 found this helpful. I am a Black woman and I have read Their Eyes Were Watching God many times, most recently when I learned that Oprah Winfrey and ABC were presenting the television movie. Nannie’s major concern when she catches Janie innocently kissing Johnny Taylor at their gate post is that Janie will end up used and abused like she and Leafy were. I am certain that the copy before editing was great. I saw 4 significant trends here: (1) Black men are prone to bad behavior (disrespecting women especially) (2) Black women, even aware of bad behavior by black men will fall for abuse anyway (3) Halle Berry's role wasn't very memorable.....hardly a difference from the movie "Queen" she starred in. The movie was extremely boring and I kept saying to myself "maybe it will get better" but it never did. especially after enduring such hardships. In this movie the main character Janie goes through many things that women today are facing and show how strong she is.
