Although the story and illustrations are somewhat overly simplistic I believe that it allows the children to view the hair and styles depicted how they like and use a bit of imagination and see themselves as the beautiful happy to be nappy ‘girlpies’ in the book. Different types of hair styles are depicted, along with words that range from loaded (like "nappy" and "frizz") to lyrical ("soft like cotton, flower-petal, billowy soft"). This isn't a book I could read over and over, but it did provide of a great message of self-acceptance. I have pictures with each of them crying with their first hair cut. The language and representations of African American culture are accurate, and the book avoids stereotypes.
